LURKING

Thena

Kye parks in my driveway, turning off the truck. He leans over, gently relieving me of the house keys to open the door for me. It’s so dark outside, I would have a hard time fitting them in their locks.

“Don’t move,” he tells me, “a lady should never have to open her door.”

That makes me smile. Between the headache I have and the events after dinner, I volunteer as tribute for the chivalry he wants to offer me. I lean my head against the headrest as Kye gets out and comes around the hood. My door opens, and I turn my head to find Kye holding his hand out to me like a gentleman. We clasp hands, and he guides me out.

“Watch your step, madame,” he warns as I find my footing.

“I’m sorry, I must have forgotten to turn the porch light on when I left,” I apologize.

“Don’t do that,” he says

“Do what?”

“Feel the need to apologize over everything.”

“I just…” I begin, but he cuts me off.

“You just dealt with a dick for years, making you feel like everything was some great offense. It’s not.”

“You’re not wrong. Wait, let me give you some light at least.” I pull my phone out of my purse. Smiling a bit, I softly say, “Some light is better than no light.”

We climb the steps together, reaching the door at the same time. CRUNCH. Glass breaks under my foot. I jump back out of reflex, but I step on something again, it too breaks under my weight. CRUNCH. I look down, my eyes taking a moment to adjust with the limited light. Confused, I scrunch my nose in disgust. What the hell?

Glass is scattered all over the front stoop. Kye’s urgency is projected in his firm hold on me as he grabs me quickly and pushes me behind him, shielding me from whatever threat he deems necessary. He scans the yard. Little good that will do, black holes are brighter than this. He must come to the same conclusion as I have because he leads me off the porch.

“Thena, go wait in the truck.”

I don’t respond. He should know me better than that, I will never hide behind a man. I step back to flash my cell phone light over the broken glass. The white shards stand out against the depth of the night. Squatting to get a closer look at the pieces, I look up directly under where the light bulb would be. Fan-fucking-tastic. I take my time studying the broken shards of glass below me, pausing to think back to exactly how it had looked earlier.

“The light had a cover on it,” I say.

“You’re sure?”

“It was encased in a sconce. If there was an electrical surge of some kind and the bulb shattered, it would be trapped inside and not currently littering my fucking porch.” I stand back up, resolved to go in with him. I’d know if there’s someone in my home. Between the both of us, we should be good. I’m not scared.
